Otakon 2008.... WITH GRAVY [12 Aug 2008|12:30pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]
[ music | 李克勤 (Hacken Lee) - 紅日 ]

Well, Otakon 2008 has come and gone and if I had to sum it up in one word it would be: EPIC. But since I DON’T have to sum it up in one word, I’ll have a more thorough report! Lots happened, so I’ll make this bullet form and try to be as concise as possible.

Thursday:

-Took the redeye flight the night before and arrived Thursday at 6am. Thanks to Phil and Kevin for picking me up so early

-Baltimore’s totally different from LA. The buildings are very nice looking, with lots of old-style architecture. Oh yeah, the area between the airport and the cities is full of greenery, something I don’t see often in LA lol.

-Went to registration at 6-7ish where it started to rain a bit…while we stood in line outdoors. Phil happened to salvage a wooden board from a bookshelf earlier to use for artist alley, so we used that for cover (and got lots of weird looks).

-Registration went pretty smoothly since it wasn’t totally administrative and hardcore like AX.

-Though, we had a problem with the convention when Anita needed a wheelchair and there wasn’t a single one in the entire convention center.

-Gave Phil & Kevin their gifts. Phil got a box of Galaxy Angel trading cards while Kevin got a Pedobear t-shirt (bought by the guys from AX). Lulz were had.

Friday:

-Lots of setup for the artist alley, 3-4 tables worth, with touch screen monitors and everything.

-The guys’ “Rocket Punch!” artbook was epic. Think it sold pretty well.

-Saw a Pedobear cosplay. I made it take a picture with Kevin. Too bad he didn’t have the t-shirt on at the time.

-Ran into more Pokemon cosplayers (outside of the gathering) than I expected. There was this one Hikari/Dawn cosplayer who just kept running into me numerous times throughout the day. We proceeded to accuse each other of stalking.

-Chibi Ash cosplayer! I challenged him to a battle on my knees. The next night I also saw a Chibi Hikari. She knocked my Munchlas over after the picture ^^;;

-1st JAM PROJECT panel was fun. The entire band were fun-loving, especially Fukuyama who would make funny faces whenever people took pictures of him.

-Pokemon gathering was fun. There was a MissingNo with a slot that says “Free Rare Candy x99!”

-However, the gathering wasn’t as organized as I hoped for it to be, unlike the one at AX.

-JAM Project concert was…how do I put this…orgasmic. They did most of their trademark songs, and everyone was into it. Unlike many singers nowadays, JAM sounds exactly the same as they do on the CDs. Best convention concert I’ve ever been to.

-Gundam Panel was fun. It was more for hardcore fans since it’s got a couple of inside jokes. I had no problem with it though!

Saturday:

-Went to the Tokusatsu panels. Was a nice discussion and saw some really funny and weird things in “Tokusatsu Hell.”

-JAM Project 2nd panel was just as good as the first. I got to ask a question (about whether Kageyama would like to do more super sentai songs in the future) and got a priority ticket in the process.

-With the priority ticket, I got to leave the panel a tad bit early to get in line early. Turns out that there were a whole lot of non-ticket people waiting in line hours before. Lucky I got the ticket and ended being the 4-5th person.

-Everyone in JAM shook our hands passionately, especially Endoh. Man, I love these guys. I got my blank autograph board signed so they could sign really big with lots of space.

-Finally saw Rebecca at the AMV contest. We had a lot to catch up on. We went to the artist alley then had dinner afterwards and exchanged lots of stories.

-Nightime: Darth Vader issued an open challenge to all cosplayers. Joker, Indiana Jones, and MGS people couldn’t take him down. Who actually beat him? Silent Bob, to whom Vader just bowed down to. And Hard Gay, who chased Vader around and even took the lightsaber in the crotch, but with no effect. Vader put up his hands and admitted defeat.

-Went to “Anime for Old Farts” panel, where a room packed with middle aged people reminisce about incredibly old shows they used to watch. There were lots of “OH!!!!! I remember that!”

-Late dinner after we left to con. On the way to the diner, we drove through quite a bit of the ghetto area. Kind of like downtown LA ^^;;

Sunday:

-Since Kevin refuses to wear his Pedobear t-shirt, Phil decided to wear it. He had so much fun with it.

-Pretty slow day, even in terms of cosplay. Wandered the dealers hall and artist alley a bit.

-Second Pokemon Gathering: there was an Ash with all 8 badges and badge case, and even Richie/Hiroshi! Oh, and Riley! He was epic!

-Played with a Pokeball beach ball for a while until security stopped it ^^;

-Did some battle poses. There was this Aipom whom I met in the first gathering who was totally awesome. He had Ipod speakers playing pokemon music all the time. He’s my Pokemon of choice in my battle pictures XD

-Like the first gathering, it quickly became disorganized after a few group pictures. Everyone was in each others’ way because there’s no one really coordinating the pictures and everyone wanted to do their thing without considering whether they’re blocking others. Was a real shame because there were some really good cosplayers who just faded into the back because they were shy and were overshadowed by the louder people.

-Met up with Rebecca briefly before she had to go back

-Oh, I ran into Stalker-Hikari again but this time she’s in lolita outfit. She spotted me (twice). The final time I was sitting in the artist alley table and we chatted a bit, exchanged cosplay.com info, etc. She’s pretty cool, albeit the stalking! j/k j/k (ChibiLoner, if you’re actually reading this, please don’t kill me!)

-Stayed in artist alley until it closed. Chaos of packing and leaving ensued.

-Left for the airport before the crew had their post-con sushi dinner because I had to catch my flight. Was a shame, but whatever.

Final Thoughts:
-Otakon felt more fan-friendly. Since it’s not as big AX, their policies and procedures aren’t as formal as AX.

- I love the convention center itself. It felt really comfortable to be in and lots of slopped walls (fun for poses). The interior is pleasant; it’s neither cramped or overwhelmingly big.

-Artist alley was wayyyy bigger than AX’s. Lots of space behind the tables and definitely more tables available.

-Dealer’s Hall didn’t have much variety and wasn’t presented as well as AX booths. And of course, AX dealer hall was like 3-4 times bigger.

-Autograph policy: the autograph tickets are actually in limited quantities, which I think is a flawed system. For those who attended the panel and didn’t get a ticket, they lose out to the people who camp out in the lines hours before and skipping the panel. Panel attendees should automatically get priority over standby people.
-It was freaking awesome meeting everyone: Phil, Kevin, Rick, Matt, Anita, Eli, Lu, Aaron, and Dan. You guys are all so fun and I hope to get the chance to hang out with you guys again even though I don't know if I'll be able to Otakon every year. Come to AX sometime!

Swag:

Not much, but: small buttons (Kyouya, Cactaur, Kamina, and ROLF), Abaranger shitakjiki from Kevin, 2 copies of the "Rocket Punch!" artbook which I actually left in Baltimore but will have them shipped to me; JAM Project tour t-shirt, JAM World Flight 2008 Best Selection CD, and last but not least, autograph board signed by all 5 members of JAM Project.

WHERE'S NYDYNE?!!!! [08 Jul 2008|09:00pm]
[ mood | bouncy ]

Title says it all... well for those who hung out with me enough at AX'08 that is lol

Highs:
-Had lots of fun cosplaying Diamond/Lucas. Lots of fun picture opportunities as a Pokemon trainer
-Pics with awesome Pokemon cosplayers such as Officer Jenny (Rhea), Volkner, etc.
-Running into just about half of JAC during the con
-Got the autographs I wanted (Shokotanx2 & director of Pokemon!)
-Gundam and Fanfic panels went well. Good job guys!
-LA Convention Center's actually a great venue. It's got plenty of space, convenient to navigate, and I didn't have to step outdoors one bit if I wanted to.
-And of course, the Gundam.com/AX.com crew. Thanks for entrusting your lives to me by following me to Little Tokyo for dinner despite some interesting encounters (B-Soda! Pinky & the Brain!). Thanks for being awesome friends to hang out with. And of course, thanks for WHERE'S NYDYNE

Lows:
-Didn't have enough time to do all that I wanted. I printed out a cosplay gathering list because I wanted to check some of them out, but barely looked at it because I was too busy doing other stuff.
-Holiday Inn ran out of stuff constantly...but we're still grateful to get a hotel that's so close AND without any Nightmare Hotel Stories (heard the Hotel Figueroa and Ritz Milner were horrible)
-Lack of options to eat. But hey, at least there's a Denny's, Japanese convenience store, and a Ralph's fairly close by!
-Didn't get to spend much of the night at the con center, partly due to lack of interest and partly due to potential safety issue.

In any case, this AX was better than last year's IMO. Down with Long Beach, up with LACC!

General Album:

Pokemon Gathering:

and lastly, the bit of swag (3 free t-shirts, Poop on a Stick Plushie, 2 Shokotan CDs with one of them signed, one signed Shokotan autograph board, Nurse Joy cel signed by the director of Pokemon, and of course, THE CHAR CUSTOM TOT BAG FROM COSPA!!!

Fuck Yeah! [30 Sep 2007|08:28pm]
[ mood | crazy ]

So I went to this Hot Sauce store at the Farmers Market and I stumbled upon this 10+ ranked (10++ is THE hottest) hot sauce

On the label: "We warned you. This is a serious fuckin' hot sauce. That's right we said it -- because we had to. There is no other way to describe just how hot this sauce is. I suppose we could have said 'It's like the fiery depths of hell' or 'That it's ass burning and even keep away from pets and small children and avoid contact with sensitive areas, but that just seems so wordy. The sauce is hot as fuck! Succinct, to the point - no beating around the bush! Honesty is always the best policy, isn't it? If this sauce burns intensely, don't be afraid to let it out. Scream fuck at the top of your lungs. You'll feel better. There is no better verbal therapy."

Reflection on Internship [10 Aug 2007|07:21pm]
[ mood | bouncy ]
[ music | Chihiro Yonekura - Yakusoku no Basho e ]

Well, I'm finally done with the actual work portion of my internship at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. I was elated to learn that I have been given an offer to work full-time starting next summer/fall after I graduate. I guess a new door of opportunity has been opened for me.

Looking back at the last 2 months, it's been quite a ride. Yeah, I got paid quite a lot, but you really earn every cent of it with lots of work at times. It's overall a work-hard play-hard profession *nod nod*. The people I worked with were just awesome; they were very supportive and the comradarie that was built during those long projects really made a difference in a bit of burden off stressful work.

So all-in-all, I'm grateful that I have a job secured for me after I'm done with UCLA, and I'm really looking forward to going back to PWC. Now, I should look towards the short-term and start preparing for my week-long trip to Disney World (it comes with the internship =P).

Homestretch OMFWTFBBQ [07 Jun 2007|05:14pm]
Finals next week, Internship starts the week after that, AX starts the weekend after that week.

I'm in a do-or-die situation once again as I scored the exact average on 3 of my 4 midterms. Will need to do very well on finals, but I can't see that happening given the little time I have *Shakes fist at finals*

But most importantly, if Scott hasn't told you guys yet, Anie hasn't been feeling well, and we're not talking about the flu. She'll be in my prayers.

Yep, hell decided to freeze for a bit which allowed me to complete my first ever actual cosplay. This was made in spirits of the UCLA Anime Club's cosplay group that went to Anime LA 2007. We went, we danced, we won, we flocked. Most important thing was that lots of good memories were made with friends (Thank you to everyone involved in this project). So without further ado, I present the "UCLA Host Club."

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

In July [info]nydyne and I robbed a bank (-50 points). Last Tuesday I gave [info]mitchoku a kidney (1000 points). Last Friday I turned [info]sporkgoddess in for running naked in the mall (3 points). Last month I gave [info]alfredman a life-saving blood transfusion (50 points). In September I got in line at the supermarket at the same time as someone else and I didn't yield (-8 points).

Overall, I've been nice (995 points). For Christmas I deserve a new dolly!

Sincerely,

Phew....all moved in and ready to have a great year at UCLA again. The 4N people from last year are back and I'm glad to be on the same floor as them again. Too bad Matt's stuck on 2N though ^^;. Anyways, yesterday I went over to check out Elizabeth's single room and hung out with her almost the entire day. That new building is fancy...big elevator with voice that tells what floor we're on oO. Oh, and I think that Super Smash Bros. addiction is coming back again..... it's unavoidable hehe.

[ music | Hacken Lee - Red Day ]

So I'm finally done with work and I have 2-3 days to rest and get ready to move in. I'm really looking forward to going back >=).

Summer Highlights:

-Anime Expo 2005
-Getting to work again
-Losing a few pounds
-Taking up badminton
-Mastering more home-cooked Chinese dishes
-Tofu Festival
-Harvest Moon Festival
-Restarting Aikido training

I think what's most important to me is that I'm doing Aikido again after years of absence. I didn't forget everything and it was like learning to ride a bike. It just came back to me and I naturally did it.

Ah well, bring on the Fall quarter!

Char350J: TM seems to have broken the girl's heart
Char350J: she's crying and stuff
LtCIronASG: Poor girl
Char350J: bet she saw his Albireo music video
LtCIronASG: XD
Char350J: haha, now he's consulting this little Caucsian kid cupid who holds his hands up and say "I dunno, say you lost a bet?" and TM shakes his head and walks away
LtCIronASG: XD
Char350J: The girl attempts suicide and jumps off a building. TM catches her in mid-air with his angel wings. They look at each other. "Hey babe, I was piloting an orange mecha and you know..."
LtCIronASG: XD!
Char350J: now he's wearing black gloves that totally don't fit his hand. I smell an "OJ"....
LtCIronASG: D:
Char350J: They have sex and he suddenly dies. He's in a coffin and she puts a flower on him. Suddenly the flower starts burning and TM opens his eyes. Model sales must have hit a slump.
LtCIronASG: XD!!!!

[ music | See-Saw - Kimi wa Boku ni Niteiru ]

So I went to my first Jury summoning in Downtown LA today. Thank goodness there was a local route towards downtown or I would've be stuck in traffic both in the morning and in the evening.

Anyways, I made my way into the assembly room, and there was an old Chinese lady next to me. She had to fill out a bunch of forms at the booth so I saved her spot. It turned out that she wasn't that fluent in English so I explained a lot of the procedures broadcasted on the speakphone (which is barely understandable). She was semi-panicking because she couldn't understand English well, so there were several times when she asks me when and how everyone will be dismissed and what happens if she gets called into a courtroom.

Anyways, no one was called in the morning and we went to lunch break. I took a small drive to Weller Court to this restaurant that specializes yakitori. Had a yakitori-don...it's not bad; I also liked the pickled vegetable that came with it. It was very refreshing.

It wasn't until 2 something when they started calling people in. Luckily I didn't get called, hehe. And out of nowhere I felt very Chinese. I was helping out a Chinese lady next to me, listening to Cantonese songs on my MD Player, and reading a book on doing Business with Chinese people---and on the other side of my seat was a cute Chinese girl :x. So yeah, no "zomg I r poser and worship all things Japanese."

By 3:40 everyone was looking forward to the final announcement relieving everyone in the assembly room from all jury duty for another 12 months---UNTIL THEY HAD ANOTHER ROLL-CALL. I think someone got called for the second time...and once again neither the old lady nor I got called in. We beat the homestretch and the entire room was cheering when the PA finally announced the end of service. The old lady thanked me before I dashed down the court building stairs (not going to join a massive flock of people in an elevator that comes once in a full moon).

All in all, it was a new experience and I learned several new things but I'd rather be at work today ^__^;
